As the Cold War reaches its fever pitch, 15-year-old David Lightman, a talented but mischievous high school student, stumbles upon a mysterious computer system while attempting to hack into a mainframe to play unreleased video games. Unbeknownst to him, he has inadvertently accessed the Defense Department's WOPR (War Operation Plan Response), a highly advanced artificial intelligence designed to predict and counter potential nuclear attacks. Intrigued by his discovery, David begins to explore the system, making friends with the AI, which he dubs "Joshua."
