The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena) is a 1973 Spanish drama film directed by Víctor Erice. Set in 1940, shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War, the story takes place on the Castilian plain, where a young girl named Ana lives with her family. Ana's fascination with James Whale's 1931 film Frankenstein leads her to attend a screening of the classic horror movie. The experience has a profound impact on her, and she becomes increasingly obsessed with the idea of bringing back the dead through science. Her fixation is fueled by conversations with a mysterious and troubled young man named Fernando, who is rumored to have escaped from a mental institution.
