The film opens with the funeral of Cameron Alexander, a white supremacist who had led a gang of young skinheads known as the "Derek Vinyard Gang." The story is told through the perspective of Danny Vineyard, Derek's younger brother. As we learn about Derek's life before prison, we see him as a charismatic and intelligent individual who is deeply troubled by the racial tensions around him. He becomes increasingly radicalized, seeking answers to his own identity and purpose in the world. Derek becomes involved with the white supremacist movement and begins to adopt its ideology, much to the dismay of his brother Danny. Derek's involvement with the movement escalates, and he soon finds himself at the center of a hate crime involving the murder of two African-American men. This event leads to Derek's arrest and subsequent imprisonment for three years. Throughout the film, we see flashbacks of Derek's life before prison, as well as his experiences during his time behind bars. We also learn about Danny's struggles to deal with the consequences of his brother's actions and his own feelings of guilt and shame. As Derek approaches his release from prison, he begins to undergo a transformation, realizing the error of his ways and seeking redemption for his past mistakes. The film ends with Derek returning home, determined to make amends for his wrongdoings and find a new path forward.
