In a dystopian future, the nation of Panem lies in ruins after a devastating war. As a form of punishment and control, the government forces each of the 12 remaining districts to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a brutal fight-to-the-death event that serves as entertainment for the oppressive Capitol's elite. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a skilled hunter from District 12, volunteers to participate in the Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) after her younger sister Prim's name is reaped.
