In 1997, the city of New York has become a maximum-security prison, with the entire island of Manhattan transformed into a massive detention center for the worst criminals in the country. The once-great metropolis is now a desolate wasteland, ruled by the tyrannical leader Coughlin and his gang of ruthless thugs. Convict Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a former special forces operative turned prisoner, is given a chance at freedom when the President's plane is hijacked and crashes in Manhattan.
