In the late 1940s, Jake LaMotta is a young and talented boxer who has already made a name for himself in the boxing world. With his aggressive fighting style and intimidating presence in the ring, he quickly rises through the ranks to become a middleweight champion. However, his success in the ring belies the turmoil that lies outside of it. Jake's personal life is marked by domestic violence and infidelity. His wife, Vickie, tries to keep him grounded and calm, but even she eventually becomes exhausted from trying to manage his temper. Jake's relationship with his brother Joey, a fellow boxer, is also strained due to their competitive nature and the pressure of their boxing careers. As Jake's boxing career begins to decline, his personal life continues to spiral out of control. He turns to self-destructive behavior, including excessive drinking and womanizing. His marriage to Vickie becomes increasingly troubled, and she eventually leaves him. The film explores the destructive power of Jake's temper and aggression, which ultimately destroy his relationships and his own sense of identity. Through a series of flashbacks and dramatic reenactments, the film recreates the chaos and violence that surrounded Jake's life, both in and out of the ring.
