As the plane takes off from Honolulu, a motley crew of passengers and crew members are on board, all unaware of the chaos that is about to ensue. The film's protagonist, Ted Striker, played by Robert Hays, is an ex-fighter pilot turned passenger who becomes convinced that his girlfriend, Elaine Dickinson, played by Julie Hagerty, has left him because he missed her wedding. As fate would have it, a severe case of food poisoning strikes the flight crew, leaving them unable to operate the plane. With no other option, Ted, who has never flown an airliner before, is forced to take over as pilot in command, with the help of the plane's auto-pilot system and a reluctant co-pilot. As Ted navigates through treacherous skies, he must contend with a host of wacky characters on board, including a seductive nun named Sister Margaretta, played by Lee Meredith, who is on her way to a spiritual retreat. He also has to deal with the plane's malfunctioning systems and a series of hilarious mishaps that threaten to send the plane crashing to the ground. Meanwhile, Elaine, the object of Ted's affections, is on board the plane as a flight attendant. As Ted works to save the day, he must also confront his feelings for Elaine and make amends for missing her wedding. With the help of some quick thinking and clever improvisation, Ted manages to land the plane safely, saving everyone on board from certain doom. Throughout the film, Airplane! pays homage to classic disaster movies while incorporating a slew of slapstick humor, witty one-liners, and memorable characters. The film's fast-paced action, physical comedy, and outrageous gags have made it a cult classic, with many regarding it as one of the funniest films of all time.
