In the heart of 1930s Paris, a young orphan named Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) lives an extraordinary life amidst the hustle and bustle of Montparnasse Train Station. With no parents to speak of, Hugo is left in the care of his gruff but loving uncle, Monsieur Reverendien (Ray Winstone), who works as a station inspector. Hugo's daily routine revolves around keeping the train station's numerous clocks ticking in perfect harmony. However, this task is merely a means to an end for the resourceful and inventive young boy, who has bigger aspirations. By day, Hugo tends to the clocks, but by night, he sneaks into the projection room of the station's old cinema, where he watches silent films and dreams of becoming a filmmaker himself. One fateful evening, while exploring the labyrinthine train station, Hugo stumbles upon an automaton named Geasir (Ben Kingsley), which was left behind by the famous French filmmaker Georges Méliès.
