In the midst of their mundane lives, married couple John and Jane Smith (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) have lost their spark. The once-passionate pair has devolved into a routine-driven existence, with John working as a furniture salesman and Jane a librarian. However, unbeknownst to each other, they are both highly trained assassins, each with their own unique skills and arsenal of deadly tactics. Their seemingly ordinary suburban life is turned upside down when both John and Jane receive simultaneous assignments from rival organizations, pitting them against each other in a cat-and-mouse game. As they navigate this treacherous terrain, they must also confront the fact that their spouses are not who they seem to be.
