In this epic retelling of the ancient Anglo-Saxon legend, Beowulf (Ray Winstone) is a mighty warrior who hails from Geatland in present-day Sweden. When he learns that the kingdom of the Danes is being terrorized by the man-like ogre Grendel (Crispin Glover), Beowulf sets sail to offer his services to King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins). Upon arriving at Heorot Hall, Beowulf and his band of brave Geats are greeted warmly by Hrothgar. The old king recounts the gruesome tale of Grendel's attacks on his people and begs Beowulf to rid him of this monstrous menace. Beowulf agrees to take on the challenge, boasting that he will not only defeat Grendel but also slay its mother should she come seeking revenge. That night, as the Danes and Geats feast and revel, Grendel emerges from the shadows to wreak havoc once again. But this time, he faces Beowulf, who is ready for him. In a fierce and intense battle, Beowulf rips Grendel's arm from its socket, leaving the monster to bleed out in the swampy waters. However, Beowulf's triumph is short-lived, as Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie) seeks revenge by killing one of Hrothgar's most loyal warriors. Enraged and determined to avenge his friend, Beowulf sets off on a perilous journey to the underwater lair of Grendel's mother. There, he faces off against this deadly female creature in an even more brutal battle than the first. Despite being severely wounded, Beowulf manages to slay Grendel's mother and then returns to Heorot Hall as a hero. Though his victories bring him great acclaim, Beowulf knows that his time is running out. As he grows old and tired, he must confront the dragon that has been terrorizing his kingdom. With his life slipping away, Beowulf knows that this final battle will be his greatest challenge yet.
