In a dystopian 2019, Neo-Tokyo lies in ruin following a catastrophic event known as the "Great Explosion." Amidst the devastation, a government-sponsored research facility in Tokyo-3 is conducting clandestine experiments to harness the power of psychic energy, code-named "Akira." The experiment goes awry when it unleashes an uncontrollable and malevolent force that transforms Tetsuo Shima, a member of a biker gang, into a powerful psychic being. As Tetsuo's powers grow, he becomes increasingly unstable and violent, wreaking havoc on the city. Enter Shotaro Kaneda, leader of the Capsule Dogs motorcycle gang, and his friend Tetsuo's childhood friend, Colonel Shikishima's daughter, Kei. The two teenagers stumble upon a group of psychics known as the "ESPer" who possess unique abilities to read minds, move objects with their thoughts, and possess other extraordinary powers. The ESPer, led by the enigmatic Colonel Misato, reveal that Akira, the powerful entity awakened by the government's experiment, is responsible for Tetsuo's transformation. The group decides to take matters into their own hands, joining forces with Kaneda and Kei to stop Tetsuo and contain the destruction he unleashes. As the battle against Tetsuo rages on, Kaneda and his friends face off against an array of formidable foes, including government agents, corrupt military personnel, and rival ESPer factions. Along the way, they uncover dark secrets about the government's true intentions behind the Akira project and the true nature of the psychic powers. The stakes grow higher as Tetsuo's powers continue to intensify, threatening to destroy Neo-Tokyo and beyond.
