As Marcus Aurelius lies on his deathbed, he reveals that he has chosen Maximus Decimus Meridius, a loyal and skilled general, as his successor. However, this decision is met with hostility by the treacherous Roman Praetorian Guard leader, Commodus, who is the emperor's son. Commodus murders Marcus Aurelius and assumes the throne, condemning Maximus to death. Maximus escapes from the executioner's sword and flees into the arena, where he fights for his life in front of a bloodthirsty crowd.
