"Lolita" (1997) is an adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel of the same name. The film tells the story of Humbert Humbert, a charming and intellectual European professor who becomes obsessed with a 12-year-old girl named Dolores Haze, known as Lolita. The film begins with Humbert's (Jeremy Irons) arrival in New England, where he takes up a teaching position at Beardsley College. He meets Charlotte Haze (Melanie Griffith), the mother of Lolita, and becomes infatuated with her. However, when Charlotte dies suddenly, Humbert's obsession shifts to Lolita herself. Humbert marries Charlotte's best friend, Rita (Laura Leigh Hughes), in order to gain access to Lolita. Despite his awkwardness around children, Humbert is drawn to Lolita's precocious nature and begins to spend more time with her. As their relationship deepens, Humbert becomes increasingly consumed by his desire for Lolita. As the film progresses, Humbert's obsession grows, and he starts to justify his actions by rationalizing that he loves Lolita and wants to protect her from the outside world. Meanwhile, Lolita (Dominique Swain) begins to sense Humbert's true intentions and becomes increasingly uncomfortable around him. The film's climax revolves around Humbert's decision to leave Rita and embark on a road trip with Lolita across the United States. As they travel, Lolita's discomfort grows, and she starts to rebel against Humbert's control. In the end, Humbert is forced to confront his own desires and the consequences of his actions. Directed by Adrian Lyne, "Lolita" is a complex exploration of obsession, morality, and the blurred lines between love and lust. The film features strong performances from its leads, particularly Jeremy Irons, who brings depth and nuance to the troubled Humbert Humbert.
