Down Periscope

Plot

Down Periscope is a 1996 American comedy film directed by David Kellogg and starring Kelsey Grammer, Rob Schneider, and Lauren Holly. The movie follows the story of Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge (Kelsey Grammer), a maverick Navy officer who has always dreamed of commanding a nuclear submarine. Despite his unconventional approach to naval duty, Dodge is given one last chance to prove himself by taking command of the aging U.S.S. Stingray, a World War II-era submarine that's being decommissioned. The Stingray's crew consists of misfit sailors who are equally skeptical of their new commander and desperate for a chance to leave the ship. As Dodge navigates the challenges of commanding his first submarine, he faces opposition from his superiors and doubts about his own abilities. However, with the help of his trusty executive officer, Buddy Young Jr. (Rob Schneider), Dodge musters up the determination to lead his crew on a series of daring missions to prove himself and earn respect. Meanwhile, the Stingray's presence is felt by the Soviet Navy, which dispatches its most advanced submarine, the Konovalov, to take out the aging American vessel. As tensions rise between the two nations, Dodge must use all his wits and ingenuity to outmaneuver the Soviets and save the day. Down Periscope features a mix of slapstick humor, witty one-liners, and heartfelt moments as Dodge learns to trust himself and his crew. The film's blend of action, adventure, and comedy has made it a cult classic among fans of military comedies.
