In the midst of the Vietnam War, US Army Captain Benjamin L. Willard receives orders to embark on a perilous journey upriver into Cambodia in search of American officer Lieutenant Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, who has gone rogue and become increasingly unstable. Officially, the mission does not exist, nor will it ever exist. Willard's odyssey begins as he sets out from Saigon with a small boat crew, including a local sampan operator named Chef, and heads towards the Cambodian jungle. As they navigate treacherous waters and hostile terrain, they encounter various factions vying for power in the war-torn region, including US military personnel, native tribes, and enemy forces.
