The Sure Thing

Plot

The Sure Thing (1985) is a coming-of-age romantic comedy that follows the unlikely pairing of Gib (John Cusack), a free-spirited college student, and Alison (Daphne Zuniga), an uptight Ivy League graduate, who find themselves stuck together on a cross-country road trip during Christmas break. Initially, Gib and Alison are at odds with each other. Gib is a beer-guzzling slob who lives life on his own terms, while Alison is a Type-A personality who has always followed the rules. The two are forced to spend Christmas together after Gib steals Alison's money, leaving her stranded in the middle of nowhere. As they embark on their journey across America, Gib and Alison clash repeatedly, with Gib's carefree nature constantly at odds with Alison's strict adherence to routine. However, as the days pass, they begin to see each other in a different light. Gib is drawn to Alison's intelligence and wit, while Alison comes to appreciate Gib's authenticity and sense of adventure. Through their shared experiences, Gib and Alison learn valuable lessons about themselves and each other. Gib learns to confront his own flaws and weaknesses, while Alison discovers the joy of embracing her more spontaneous side. As they grow closer, they must confront their differences and decide whether their unlikely friendship can blossom into something more. The Sure Thing is a charming and witty film that explores themes of identity, self-discovery, and the power of human connection. With its memorable characters, clever dialogue, and picturesque settings, this holiday classic has become a beloved favorite among fans of 1980s teen comedies.
