In 1978, con artist Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) has built a lucrative business with his unpredictable and volatile partner, Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). They have created a fake woman, "Dusty", a former Miss Atlantic City, to dupe unsuspecting investors out of their money. Their operation is going smoothly until they are caught by FBI Agent Richie DiMaso (Jonah Hill), who blackmails them into working for him. DiMaso has discovered that Irving's business partner, Victor Tellegio (Robert De Niro), is involved in some shady dealings with the Mafia.
