In the desolate town of Desperation, Sheriff George Toddy has been tasked with containing a mysterious force that threatens to destroy everything it comes into contact with. When a series of unsuspecting travelers find themselves at the mercy of the sheriff's whims, they are brutally arrested and thrown into a cramped and foreboding jail cell. Among those arrested is Johnny Marinville, a self-absorbed writer seeking inspiration for his next big novel. Joining him in the cell are David and Kara Stanton, a loving couple on their way to visit relatives; Collie Entragian, a hitchhiker with a mysterious past; and Steve Ames, a truck driver who has just been released from prison. As the group tries to make sense of their predicament, they begin to realize that something is terribly wrong in Desperation. The sheriff's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, and the townspeople seem to be hiding secrets of their own. As tensions rise, the travelers must band together to uncover the truth behind the strange occurrences in Desperation. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Toddy has a dark agenda of his own. He is obsessed with an ancient entity known as Tak, which he believes holds the power to bring about a new era of peace and harmony. However, this "peace" comes at a terrible cost: the destruction of everything that exists. As the group fights for their lives against Toddy's sinister plans, they must also confront their own personal demons. Will they be able to survive the horrors that await them in Desperation, or will they succumb to the same evil forces that are driving Toddy mad?
