In the midst of the Great Depression, Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) and Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) form an unlikely partnership to exact revenge on the ruthless Doyle Lonsdale (Robert Shaw), who brutally murders Johnny's mentor, Louie Carver.
