Paranormal Activity follows the story of Micah (Micah Sloat) and Katie (Katie Featherston), a young couple who have just moved into a new home in San Diego. Initially, everything seems normal, with the exception of some strange noises and movements that they attribute to the house settling. However, as time passes, the occurrences become more frequent and intense, leaving them feeling uneasy and frightened. As Katie starts to experience strange and terrifying events, including unexplained footsteps, doors opening and closing, and an unseen presence lurking in the shadows, she becomes convinced that their home is haunted by a malevolent entity. Despite Micah's skepticism, Katie becomes increasingly desperate for answers and turns to various methods of capturing evidence of the paranormal activity. One night, they set up cameras around the house to capture any unusual activity on film. The resulting footage reveals a series of inexplicable events, including doors opening and closing, objects moving on their own, and ghostly apparitions. As the couple's relationship begins to fray under the strain of the supernatural occurrences, they realize that the presence in their home is not just a simple spirit but something far more sinister. As the events escalate, Katie becomes convinced that the entity is becoming more aggressive and malevolent, threatening to destroy their lives and sanity. Desperate for help, she turns to a psychic medium who reveals that the entity may be connected to an old woman who died in the house many years ago. In the end, it becomes clear that the couple's home is indeed haunted by a dark force that will stop at nothing to torment them. As the film reaches its climax, Katie and Micah are left facing a terrifying reality: they may not survive the night.
