In 1943, Samuel Mullins, a dollmaker, and his wife Esther are still reeling from the tragic loss of their young daughter Bee. Seeking to mend their broken hearts, they open their doors to a nun, Sister Charlotte, and several orphan girls who have been left without a home after their orphanage is shut down due to mysterious occurrences. Unbeknownst to the Mullins, one of the girls, 7-year-old Annabelle Dunseverick, has brought with her a cursed doll that she had received as a gift from a neighbor. The doll, which is said to be possessed by the malevolent spirit of a vengeful bride named Annabelle Higgins, begins to exert its dark influence on the Mullins and their new family.
