In the early 1960s, Jackson, Mississippi is a segregated town where social norms are deeply entrenched. Aibileen Clark, a middle-aged African-American maid, has spent her life raising white children and caring for their every need. Despite her tireless efforts, Aibileen's life is marked by loss and hardship, having recently lost her only son. Minny Jackson, another African-American maid, has built a reputation for being the best cook in town, but her sharp tongue often gets her into trouble. When Minny insults her employer, Hilly Holbrook, she faces severe consequences that leave her ostracized by the very people she relies on for work. The lives of Aibileen and Minny intersect when Skeeter Phelan, a young white journalist, decides to write a book about the experiences of African-American women who work as maids in Jackson. Aibileen, who has recently lost her only son, becomes Skeeter's source and confidante. Together, they begin to reveal the dark secrets and injustices faced by these women, who are forced to live in segregated neighborhoods and work in homes where their personal dignity is constantly eroded. As Minny struggles to find a new job after being fired by Hilly, she becomes determined to exact revenge on her former employer. With Aibileen's help, Minny concocts a plan that will expose the truth about Hilly's cruel behavior and bring attention to the broader issues of racial segregation and discrimination in Jackson. Through their stories, The Help explores themes of racism, classism, and sexism, highlighting the struggles faced by African-American women who worked as maids during the Civil Rights Era.
