In the seemingly idyllic suburban community of Cuesta Verde, the Freeling family - comprised of Steve, a real estate agent, his wife Diane, and their three children Dana, Robbie, and Carol Anne - have just moved into a brand new home. The youngest child, Carol Anne, begins to experience strange and terrifying occurrences that seem to emanate from within the walls of their house. At first, her parents dismiss her claims as mere fantasy, but soon, supernatural events escalate, including furniture moving on its own, eerie whispers in the night, and a gruesome discovery of skeletons hidden beneath the foundation of their home. As the family's grip on reality begins to slip, they seek help from paranormal investigators Dr. Lesh and her team. The investigation reveals that their house lies atop an ancient Native American burial ground, awakening malevolent spirits that have been dormant for centuries. The Freeling family soon finds themselves trapped in a desperate battle against forces beyond their understanding, as the dark energies intensify their attacks on Carol Anne.
