In the desolate landscape of Antarctica, a team of American scientists, led by R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), arrive at an abandoned Norwegian research station. The outpost has been ravaged and left in disarray, with no signs of life anywhere. As they begin to survey the damage, they stumble upon a series of gruesome and inexplicable events that hint at a sinister presence lurking beneath the surface. The team soon discovers that the Norwegians had uncovered an alien creature, frozen in the ice for millennia, which has since thawed out and begun to wreak havoc on the station.
