In the realm of Outworld, the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chao Li Chi) has dominated the Mortal Kombat tournaments for nine consecutive cycles, allowing him to spread darkness and chaos throughout the realms. Meanwhile, in the Earthrealm, a group of warriors are chosen by the gods to participate in the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, with the hope of defeating Shang Tsung and ending his reign of terror. The protagonist, Liu Kang (Robin Shou), is a Shaolin monk who has been training for years to master the ancient art of kung fu. He is joined by his friends and allies, including Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), a Hollywood actor seeking fame; Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson), a determined and deadly assassin; and Kano (Trevor Murphy), a ruthless mercenary. As the warriors arrive on the mystical island of Shang Tsung's lair, they are met with treachery and deception.
