In a small town, a young housewife, Zhou Yunwen, lives a dull and uneventful life with her husband, Dai Liyan. Liyan lost his family property and his courage to face reality in the war, and he now spends his days in melancholy. The couple respects each other, but in reality, they have lost all emotional connection. Their monotonous life is disrupted by the arrival of a young doctor, Zhang Zhichen, from the outside world. Zhichen is Liyan's friend of eight years and also Yunwen's past lover. Liyan's sister, Dai Xiu, falls in love with Zhichen, but he rejects her. Zhichen still has feelings for Yunwen, but he is torn by his emotions. In the past, he and Yunwen did not get married because of opposition from her mother. Now that her mother has passed away, Yunwen has a husband, and Zhichen's heart is filled with conflicting emotions. Yunwen, although devoted to her husband, cannot help but think of Zhichen, and she feels guilty towards Liyan. Meanwhile, Liyan decides to bring the two together and attempts to take his own life by swallowing sleeping pills. However, he is rescued in time. After this emotional turmoil, Yunwen reevaluates her feelings for her husband, Liyan, and decides to rebuild their relationship. Zhichen, on the other hand, makes up his mind to leave the small town. On a spring morning, Yunwen, Liyan, and his sister, Xiu, gather at the town gate to bid farewell to Zhichen. They watch as Zhichen sets off towards the outside world, a symbolic representation of new beginnings and possibilities. As the three of them stand at the town gate, they reflect on the events that have transpired. Yunwen and Liyan have come to terms with their emotions, and their relationship has been rejuvenated. Zhichen, despite his lingering feelings for Yunwen, has decided to move on and start anew. The film ends on a hopeful note, with the promise of a brighter future for all three characters.
