In the year 2159, humanity has been divided into two distinct social classes. The privileged few inhabit Elysium, a luxurious and self-sustaining space station that epitomizes the pinnacle of human innovation and opulence. This utopian paradise is home to the wealthy elite who enjoy unparalleled comfort, medical care, and technological advancements. In stark contrast, the majority of humanity struggles to survive on a ravaged and overpopulated Earth. The planet has been ravaged by environmental disasters, wars, and poverty, leaving behind a desolate landscape and a desperate population. This dichotomy is exacerbated by the strict border control that separates Elysium from Earth, making it virtually impossible for anyone to access the luxurious space station. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), the cold and calculating head of Elysium's internal security force, is determined to maintain the status quo at any cost.
