In 1929, a young girl named Chiyo Sakamoto is sold by her poor fishing family to an okiya, a traditional Japanese geisha house, after the death of her mother and the impending starvation of herself and her sister. The okiya's proprietress, Mameha, forces Chiyo to take on the identity of Pumpkin, a young apprentice geisha, in order to survive. As Chiyo grows up within the okiya, she is trained in the art of traditional Japanese dance, music, and poetry, becoming an accomplished geisha named Sayuri. Alongside her peers, Mameha, and their stern mistress, Hatsumomo, Chiyo/Sayuri navigates the complexities of a rigid social hierarchy, where women are expected to conform to certain roles and expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn when Sayuri meets the enigmatic Chairman Mori, who becomes infatuated with her. Their complex relationship is fraught with tension as Sayuri struggles to reconcile her own desires with the societal norms that dictate her behavior. Meanwhile, Chiyo's friend and rival, Hatsumomo, seeks to sabotage Sayuri's success at every turn.
