As the third mission to land on the Moon, Apollo 13 was expected to be a routine success. But when an explosion occurs on board, crippling the spacecraft's power source and leaving astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise stranded in space, the mission quickly turns into a fight for survival. The initial blast is caused by an oxygen tank rupturing due to faulty wiring, which sends the astronauts' carbon dioxide scrubber and most of their power source flying out of commission. With their lunar landing plans scrapped and limited supplies remaining, Lovell and his crew must improvise using the resources they have on hand to keep themselves alive. Mission Control in Houston, led by Gene Kranz, springs into action to devise a plan for rescue. Director Christopher Whitman's team, including Ed White and Jay Greenberg, work tirelessly to come up with a solution that will bring the astronauts safely back to Earth.
