As the sun sets on Manhattan, newly divorced Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) and her 11-year-old daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart) are trying to start anew. They've just moved into their new home, a large brownstone that offers them a fresh start. However, their peaceful evening is disrupted when three masked burglars, led by the cunning Burnham (Forest Whitaker), break in through the back door. In a desperate attempt to protect themselves and their valuables, Meg had previously converted a hidden room in the house into a panic room - a secure space designed to keep intruders at bay. As the burglars begin to search the premises, Meg and Sarah make a hasty retreat to the panic room, hoping to wait out the chaos. Trapped inside the small, high-tech sanctuary, Meg and Sarah are faced with a desperate game of cat-and-mouse. The burglars, unaware of the panic room's existence, continue to search for valuables outside, while Meg and Sarah must use their wits and resourcefulness to stay one step ahead.
