In ancient times, the powerful sorceress Anck-Su-Namun was betrayed by her lover Pharaoh Seti I and buried alive in the tomb of Hamunaptra. Three millennia later, in the scorching desert of 1920s Egypt, American adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) finds himself entangled in a treacherous quest to uncover the secrets of the long-lost city. As O'Connell's expedition battles against rival treasure hunters and ruthless warlords, they stumble upon an ancient scroll that sets them on a perilous journey to awaken the titular Mummy, Imhotep.
