As the darkness descends upon Point Pleasant, West Virginia, a sense of unease settles over its residents. It begins with small, seemingly insignificant events: a child's drawing of a winged creature; a mysterious symbol etched into the bark of an ancient tree; and whispers of a harbinger of doom that appears to be watching from the shadows. Reporter John Klein, still reeling from the sudden loss of his wife, is drawn to this small town by a series of cryptic clues. As he delves deeper into the mystery, he finds himself at the center of a maelstrom of inexplicable occurrences. Buildings implode without warning; people vanish without a trace; and an otherworldly presence seems to be orchestrating it all.
